Minister for Innovation Policy presents Awards
Michael Ahern, T.D, Minister of Innovation Policy and T.D for Fermoy, Co.Cork presents staff from Shaws department store in Fermoy with their Retail Occupational Qualifications at a recent awards ceremony. Also present at the presentations were James Lacey, Store manager, Shaws Fermoy; Tom O’Brien, H.R manager for the Shaws group and Mr. Donny Flynn, IBEC Retail Skillnet regional consultant for the Cork region. Donny Flynn said “The Shaws group are leading the way in the delivery of Occupational Qualifications in their stores across the country”. He added “In an increasingly competitive market upskilling of staff is essential and Shaws have recognised the value of training with shop floor staff”.
Retail Security Awards Night February 2008
The presentation of FETAC Level 5 Retail Security certificates, at the Ramada Hotel, Letterkenny was attended by IBEC Retail Skillnet National Co-ordinator, Sean Carlin and the Crime Prevention officer for Donegal, Sgt. Paul Wallace.
The Awards night was a huge success with all participating companies in attendance. Staff from the following stores all recieved Awards on the night: Euroexchanger, Gary’s Pet World (Letterkenny), Hegarty’s (Buncrana), Inishowen Co-op (Moville, Carndonagh and Buncrana), McElhinneys Department Store (Ballybofey), Natural Way (Letterkenny), Proctors (Letterkenny), Ramada Hotel (Letterkenny), Surlis SuperValu (Tobercurry), P.Tinney & Sons (Letterkenny) and Tobin’s Gala Store (Letterkenny).

Occupational Qualifications presented by Minister McGuinness
Shaw’s Department Store, Carlow, celebrated the success of store staff at a recent Awards night. Successful candidates received their FETAC Level 5 Retail Occupational Qualification Certificates from Minister for Trade and Commerce, J.McGuinness, T.D.
Senior members of Shaw’s management team attended the celebrations. Tom O’Brien, Shaw’s Group H.R. Manager and Chairman of the Retail Steering Committee, assisted with the presentations.
Caroline Heagney, IBEC Retail Skillnet Regional Consultant, who attended the Awards night, said “Shaw’s are one of the foremost retailers in the country, and recognise the importance of the highest standards of training for staff working in their stores”.

Visit of Director of Singapore Institute of Retail Studies
During a recent information gathering trip to Singapore and Dubai, with the British Shops and Stores Association, Sean Carlin, National Co-ordinator, met with Dr. Viswanath Seshamni, Director of the Singapore Institute of Retail Studies. The Institute or Retail Studies is a progressive institution which looks to provide cutting edge training and education for retailers in Singapore.
In early January 2008, Dr. Seshamni and Mrs. C. Y. Poo, Special Projects Co-ordinator with the Singapore Institute of Retail Studies travelled to Ireland to review the Occupational Qualifications training programme offered by IBEC Retail Skillnet. He also discussed the possibility of developing an Asian-European qualification for retailers.

The Impact of Drink and Drugs in the Workplace
Dr. Michael Gordon and Dr. Mark Shevlin from the University of Ulster gave a talk on the increasing impact which drink and drugs are having in the workplace. They highlighted the importance of recognising the symptoms of drink and drug abuse in the workforce and the implementation of policies and procedures to deal with the issue.
Dr. Gordon’s research suggested that “25% of all workplace accidents are caused by employees under the influence of drink or drugs at work”. He added that “this is an issue which affects not only the staff, but also customers, suppliers and anyone else who uses the store on a regular basis”
The talk was attended by many local retailers.
